Objective eight - Inspecting bodies use coordinated and proportionate methods of enforcement

Objective 8 is underpinned by 4 practices that promote:

  • the alignment of action planning processes
  • the costing of recommendations and actions; and

encourage those organisations with powers of enforcement to:

Practice 8.1: Coordinated recommendations and action planning
Recommendations and action plans are aligned with those of other inspecting bodies where appropriate and there is coordinated monitoring of their implemenation through the inspected bodies' business plans. Inspecting bodies develop a shared framework to assist follow-up.

Practice 8.2: Range of enforcement mechanisms
Inspecting bodies develop a range of mechanisms for enforcement that can respond to the differing requirements of inspected bodies. Bodies with enforcement powers use the most straightforward mechanisms that are consistent with effective action.

Practice 8.3: Cost recommendations and actions
Inspecting bodies, in consultation with those who provide health and social care, consider, where practicable, the balance of costs and benefits, distinguishing, where necessary, between basic compliance and best practice. Cost is addressed in published reports.

Practice 8.4: Enforcement powers
Inspecting bodies that have enforcement powers adopt the Government’s Enforcement Concordat.
