Reviews of hospital acquired infections
The National Audit Office (NAO) first conducted a review hospital acquired infections in 2000. The approach taken included providing a feedback report to each acute trust. The Commission for Healthcare Inspection (CHI), as part of its clinical governance review, requested copies of the feedback reports and consequently checked progress. The NAO, in its follow-up report in 2004, checked CHI’s findings and where relevant included references to them in the report. The Secretary of State has now charged the Healthcare Commission with undertaking an inspection of trusts infection control practice in summer 2005. The NAO have liaised extensively with the Healthcare Commission, including providing detailed findings from their 2004 survey and one of the team members who worked on the NAO study is now working for the Healthcare Commission.
