Practice 4.7 Benchmarking costs and performance

Examples of notable practice:

Comparing costs and benefits

This is closely linked with practices 4.2 and 6.5. Built into our plans for long-term programmes of evaluation and impact assessment for new inspections is the idea of comparing the costs and benefits brought to different types of healthcare organisation and different organisations within the same type. For example, the Healthcare Commission has incorporated this into their evaluation strategy. And it will be possible to track the results over time.

Demonstrating cost effectiveness

The health studies team at the National Audit Office is required to identify savings to the NHS of at least eight times its own cost. This is achieved by demonstrating agreed and quantified financial benefits as part of each value for money study that is conducted.
